When the weather changes, so does our situation. A storm wakes both of us up during the night and he asks, âWhat am I going to do tomorrow?â After breakfast I say I have to start work, and he goes upstairs, listens to his music tapes for a while. About an hour later he returns, stands behind me and puts his hands on my shoulders. âThink Iâll go out and drive around.â His voice sounds disconsolate. I suggest going to a movie in the evening, but his response is listless. In the middle of the afternoon a small pebble, thrown from behind, hits my typewriter. I look up and see him leaning in the doorway.
âCome here!â
The order is carried out with obvious bravado, and I smile. He grins too, but says, âIâve got to talk to you.â In the living room he takes his usual chair, glances out of the windows. It has stopped raining but there are low drifting clouds. Everything is gray and blurred; you canât see as far as the ocean.
âThereâs been something not right between us from the start.â He gives me an accusing look. âI canât seem to arouse your genuine interest!â I stare at him, and he says, âYou donât ask enough!â
âWhat should I have asked you about?â
âMe. I wanted you to read all those letters, and you did, then you hardly said anything about them. Donât you care how I felt about all those other people? Didnât it occur to you that if you didnât know, you couldnât be sure how I felt about you?â
âYes, it occurred to me.â
âThen why didnât you ask?â
âI thought Iâd find out anyway. Didnât it occur to you that if I didnât ask, I was taking you on trust?â
He gazes at me in deep surprise. Finally he says, âNo. I never thought about that.â
âDid all those other people ask you a lot of questions?â
âEverything, they wanted to know everything!â
âWhy was that, do you suppose?â
He looks slightly embarrassed. âYou may think this sounds conceited, but they were in love with me.â
âIsnât that rather a pity, if you werenât in love with them?â
He doesnât answer for a moment. His eyes look very dark and remote. âIâve never been in love.â The mouth twitches. âIf I decided to leave tomorrow, would you be sorry?â
âI canât answer that till it happens.â
He jumps to his feet. âJesus, you donât give a shit!â
âI didnât say that.â
He turns away, stares at the floor. âAlmost. You wouldnât really try and stop me.â His shoulders hunch slightly. âNobody ever does.â
âIâm surprised. A moment ago you said all those people were in love with you.â
âYes, they were. Butâ¦â He breaks off. âI donât know. Something happens. Iâm pretty honest with people and I donât pretend I feel for them what they feel for me. I always tell them itâs no big deal, but they believe what they want to believe. Or they imagine Iâll come around and see how beautiful and wonderful they really are, and go on my knees to them.
